Animation Jams

I just love Animation Jams. This is an event where you have usually 36h to create some animation. There is a topic that is very open to interpretation. So you can just be totally crazy for 36h, try out things you haven't had time for yet. It's always a lot of fun, especially when everybody gets tired and ideas start to become very weird. So I am proud to present the various animation jam videos that were done with my helping hand during the course of my student and professional life. It started out with jams me and a few friends organized for fun. The videos here are sorted with newest first.

Scatterbrain

2024

Also created as part of the AnimaPlus Jam. This turned a lot more personal than the previous entries. The idea was to display the daily struggle of our focus split among various things. May it be work, the phone or social media. Sometimes we just need a cup of a brew and get away from it all. Created in a 2 person team with Doris Rastinger.

Gulasch

2023

Created as part of the AnimaPlus Jam. There is a famous cooking show in Austria and we wanted to make a parody of that. What happens when the Gulasch fights back? We bought parts of the assets, especially the background to safe some time. All the work was done in Blender and rendered with Cycles. Initially we planned to use EEVEE for faster rendering speeds but the quality was just not there. It was a close call to finish it and some of the shots were re-rendered with higher quality after the jam. Created in a 2 person team with Doris Rastinger.

Earl Grey

2022

Also created as part of the Cardiff Quick Draw animation jam. We wanted to do something classy. Very stylish but still silly at the core. What is more classy than tea. The perspective is cheated in most of the shots. Since we were using a square aspect ratio with an orthographic camera we had to tilt the cups towards the camera to make the characters visible. This is rendered in Blender's Cycles Path tracer. At the time it recently got a nice denoiser and we used the artifacts it produces at low samples as a stylistic choice. Created in a 3 person team with Markus Hadinger and Doris Rastinger.

Blarghragh Apparel

2021

Created as part of the Cardiff Quick Draw animation jam. The basic premise was to create a fake commercial but make it weird. Thus we have zombies planting replacement limbs to be sold at a market. Created in a 3 person team with Markus Hadinger and Doris Rastinger.

Banane begeht Selbstmord

2018

This animation can be described as the ultimate culmination of the preceding two. It is deep. It it bullshit. It was just a lot of fun to create. The idea was to show the whole life of a banana just as he commits suicide. Including true love and romance. Since it's 3D animated, and rendering usually takes a long time we decided to go with viewport renderings. Essentially glorified playblasts. But with some compositing, most importantly some glow, it looks surprisingly good. Created in a 2 person team with Markus Hadinger.

Bussi Bussi

2018

Where with Hypocritical we didn't succeed in creating major bullshit, we sure as hell did here. Perfectly summed up in the description of the video, this animation is about "A regular day on the bus, with all its typical inconveniences". We wanted to take something very ordinary and just completely go crazy with it. It is all "handcrafted", with a mix of Stop-motion and just bad puppetry.

Hypocritical

2017

I was a ton of fun, but we kind of didn't succeed in our goal of creating major bullshit. The idea of the animation was that there is a person that looks like the nicest person to the public but has major issues in his family life. So in the end he loses it all but then he pays for a restart.
